Fort William is situated on a hill in the Ghanaian city of Cape Coast in Ghana, a former British colony.
Till 1819-20, called Smith's Tower (the fort was built out of mud and stone) on Dawson's Hill under Governor Hope-Smith. Fort William was one of a chain of 3 lookout posts built on the hills in the town of Cape Coast around Cape Coast Castle. |

These forts or out looks were used, protecting Cape Coast Castle and the European settlements against Ashanti kingdom attacks, during a long series of wars with the largest and powerful kingdoms, of what today is called Ghana, as well as for signalling purposes. The then British Gold Coast came to a peace by 1904, after the British were able to capture the king as well as other leading figures within the Ashante kingdom, whereby a semi-independence was still granted. |
